2025 Solo Travel Destinations for Women
Dreaming of a solo adventure? These top destinations for 2025 offer the perfect mix of safety, culture, and unforgettable experiences for women traveling solo.
Happy Women’s History Month!
It seems outrageous that there was a time in our history when we wouldn’t be allowed to run a business, but we’re grateful to be out of the dark ages and not dependent on men for our success. Now even though we can acknowledge all the progress that’s been made on women’s rights, we also know that being a woman in this world is still not the easiest task. Women face higher levels of violence and discrimination, which can be particularly scary when traveling. A lot of women avoid traveling alone or without a man out of fear for their safety, which is totally fair! While you should remain cautious and vigilant wherever you are, we’ve put together some suggestions on places we’ve gone where you can feel safe, especially as a solo traveler.
Where To Go For Your Solo Trip
Greece: We could say so many great things about Greece but for our current context what you need to know is the greek are some of the friendliest, most welcoming people in the world. I can’t tell you how many times I was greeted with the most genuine enthusiasm. I spent a lot of time walking around, not quite sober, and I felt totally at ease. As a New Yorker it takes a lot for me to fully relax and trust my surroundings so this is a pretty big accomplishment. Also, there’s so much to see in Greece so if you’re worried about being bored alone, you literally can’t get bored! - Briana
Italy: Similar to their friends across the Ionian Sea, the Italians are also very warm and welcoming. I lived in Rome for a semester and traveled around the country and I never felt unsafe or worried alone. Even on my many late nights in the piazzas. Also, if you are looking to make friends, the Italian men are very friendly. - Briana
Thailand: Thailand is a solo traveler’s paradise—super affordable, easy to navigate, and packed with different types of adventure. Whether you’re temple-hopping in Bangkok (make sure you dress appropriately, knees and shoulders covered!), island-hopping in Krabi, or eating your way through Chiang Mai’s night markets, you’ll never feel alone (unless you want to be). The country’s well-established backpacker and luxury travel scenes make it easy to meet people, find hidden gems, and explore at your own pace. I have traveled several times solo throughout different parts of Thailand and have the experiences incredibly peaceful and renewing. Bonus: Thailand is incredibly safe, so you can focus on making memories, not worrying about logistics. -Jordan
Costa Rica: If you read Costa Rica and immediately pictured surfer bros and a jungle, you’ve got the right idea. Costa Rica is a top recommended solo travel destination. It tends to attract a lot of ex-pats and the pura vida lifestyle lends itself to relaxed, safe surroundings.
Puerto Rico: If you’d rather start a little closer to home, Puerto Rico is a great place to take your first solo trip. No passport needed as a US citizen, and the island is full of fun people to meet and fun things to do! And even if you show up solo, finding a dance partner won’t be a problem at all.
Zanzibar: If your ideal solo trip involves white-sand beaches, rich history, and a touch of adventure, Zanzibar delivers. This island off the coast of Tanzania is an intoxicating mix of Swahili culture, spice farms, and turquoise waters. Wander Stone Town’s winding streets, sail on a dhow at sunset, or unwind on a secluded beach with nothing but the ocean breeze. It’s an easy place to connect with fellow travelers or enjoy peaceful solitude, making it a top pick for independent explorers looking for both relaxation and discovery.
We do offer what should be an obvious caveat to all of these and remind you to not make yourself an easy target. Whether you’re alone or in a group, most locals can spot tourists a mile away and even the nicest countries have some people you definitely don’t want to attract. Keep the flashy jewelry and accessories to a minimum, watch your drinks and your surroundings. Anyone of any gender can become a victim when you get careless.
