3 Tips to Stay Active on Vacation

SAVE THIS FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP!

Want to stay active while traveling without sacrificing fun? These simple tips will help you move your body without spending hours in a hotel gym. Need help planning your next adventure? Let’s chat!

I’ll caveat this by saying even though I’m a fitness addict, I rarely workout on vacation. I typically focus on things I can’t do at home. That being said, I do try to incorporate activities that involve movement because I like a well rounded itinerary. Unless I’m in Napa. The only thing I care about being well rounded in Napa is my wine glass, but I digress. If being active is something you seek out on vacation, here’s what I recommend:

Expand your definition of working out:

When you think of working out, maybe your first thought is a row of treadmills and a ton of dumbbells. Working out also includes walking, running, hiking, swimming and so many other movements that can naturally work their way into your itinerary.

I’m a big fan of walking around wherever I go so my vacation step counts tend to be astronomically high compared to my everyday life. I also love hiking to a beautiful view. I’m a sucker for a good landscape. There’s nothing like getting your heart rate up and being rewarded with a jaw-dropping view.

Say Yes Pro Tip: Research top walking or hiking routes in your destination before you go. If you’re traveling to a city, look up food or history walking tours to get your steps in while discovering something new!

Do your research

If you prefer a more traditional gym workout, research your accommodations ahead of time to see if there’s a gym on site that’s actually usable. (We’ve all seen those sad hotel gyms with a single rusty treadmill and a broken yoga mat.).

Better yet, some resorts offer unique fitness classes—like beachfront yoga, dance cardio, or even pool Zumba. I once stayed at a resort in the Dominican Republic that offered a pool zumba class. Zumba with easy access to a pool bar afterward is a fantastic combination.

Say Yes Pro Tip: If gym access is a non-negotiable for you, let your travel advisor know (hi, that’s us!) so we can book you at a hotel that actually meets your needs.

BYOE (Bring your own equipment):

Resistance bands and sliders are super easy to pack and will allow you to workout indoors or outdoors with minimal space needed. Both will allow you to mimic some of the moves you may do in the gym without needing access to machines.

A simple resistance band circuit can hit every muscle group without needing heavy weights or machines. Or, throw a jump rope in your bag for a quick cardio blast that doesn’t require a ton of space. It’s way more effective (and fun) than jogging in place in your hotel room.

Final Thoughts: Move in a Way That Feels Good for You

At the end of the day, vacations are for enjoying yourself. If hitting the gym makes you feel good, do it! If you’d rather get your movement in through fun activities—walking, swimming, dancing the night away—that totally counts too.
